Starting / Splitting Wedge
Have you ever been frustrated with the thick, blunt, hardware store splitting wedges that just bounce when you try to set them? These thin taper starting wedges are designed for starting a split while processing green wood for projects such as bowls, spoons, and chair and other furniture parts. A split thus started, can accept a larger steel wedge or wooden glut to finish opening the wood. This thin starting wedge will set on the first strike. It has been just slightly tapered on the narrow sides back to the striking face, along with a gentle rounding, giving it a secure comfort in the palm while driving it. Made of 4140 steel, the edge is hardened and tempered, but the struck end is left relatively tough so as not to chip while being struck. Be sure to wear eye protection and gloves when striking steel tools.
Small: 3/4 - 7/8” thick, 2” wide, 4” long, nominal.
Large: 3/4 - 7/8” thick, 2” wide, 6” long, nominal.
Extra Large: 3/4 - 7/8” thick, 2” wide, 8” long, nominal
Double taper: 7/8” thick, 2” wide and 6-1/2” long. Nominal.
